Islampur College, which started its journeytowards ac-ademic excellence on and from 4th December 1973, h as developed as a prominent and well -equipped academic Institutionin Islam pur Subdivision. The College was established by local initiative of persons interested in education and by public donations. It is one of the fruitful outcome of the dream of the entire population of the region. After partition and Independence Islampur was under Purnia district of Bihar State.
According to Indian Transfer and Territories Act of 1956, the area was transferred from Bihar and a new Sub-division under the then West
Dinajpur district of West Bengal came into being. Since then Islampur gained importance both strategically and economically though the mainstay of the life of the people by and large is agriculture.
